Different Beliefs Diverse People One Faith Unitarian Universalism is a religious community characterized by support for a "free and responsible search for truth and meaning". Unitarian Universalists do not share a creed; rather, they are unified by their shared search for spiritual growth and by the understanding that an individual's theology is a result of that search and not obedience to an authoritarian requirement. Unitarian Universalists draw on many different theological sources and have a wide range of beliefs and practices. Historically, both Unitarianism and Universalism have roots in the Christian faith. Contemporary Unitarian Universalists espouse a pluralist approach to religion, whereby the followers may be atheist, theist, or any point in between. Unitarian Universalism was formed from the merger in 1961 of two historically Christian denominations, the Universalist Church of America and the American Unitarian Association, both based in the United States. At the time of the North American merger, the theological significance of these terms had expanded beyond the traditional Christian understanding. Unitarian Universalists today draw from a variety of religious traditions. Individuals may or may not self-identify as Christians or subscribe to Christian beliefs. Unitarian Universalist congregations and fellowships tend to retain some Christian traditions, such as Sunday worship with a sermon and the singing of hymns. The extent to which the elements of any particular faith tradition are incorporated into personal spiritual practice is a matter of personal choice for congregants, in keeping with a creedless, non-dogmatic approach to spirituality and faith development.

All Souls UU Church NEWSletter: Ministers Series, Part I - Alfred von Stilli In 1998, All Souls Church began publication of a NEWSletter. The second edition initiated a series of articles about the church’s early ministers. Information for project was gleaned from church records, photographs and articles from the Brownsville Herald. All Soul’s first historian - Dr. Beatrice Hawkins - maintained a well ordered “scrapbook” that documented events of the earliest years of the church. All these documents were rescued from the humidity and insect infestation of Von Stilli Hall. They are in a continual state of reorganization, but are being preserved. The first article in the All Soul’s ministers series is from the NEWSletter, volume 1, issue 2 (October 15, 1998). It gives an overview of the work of All Souls founder and first minister - Alfred E. von Stilli. All Souls Church Covenant and Statement of Purpose - 1954 An unknown poet, from an unknown time wrote: My church has but one temple, Wide as the world is wide, Set with a million altars, Where a million hearts abide. My church has no creed to bar A single brother man, But says, "come thou and worship," To everyone who can. In 1954, the Reverend John Forwalter, second minister of All Souls Church, had printed pocket sized cards expressing his understanding of the Covenant and Purpose of Brownsville's Unitarian Church. Only one of these cards remains in our possession, and it has been badly maligned by time and bugs. Here, Rev. Forwalter gives words to the spirit of "Our Covenant," and "Statement of Purpose." It appears that the "Statement of Purpose" revisits the original "Objectives" of the Unitarian Church of the Rio Grande Valley, adopted September 19, 1951. Incomplete copies of 1951 "Objectives" exist in church notes, but the original document has been lost. The completion of the Forwalter's text was printed on the backside of a card that was severely damaged. The words typed below the photocopy of the document are an exact reproduction of the short, concluding phrase. To recognize as one of the many religious cultures, our natural Christian heritage; to seek within it the enduring values; to follow as we understand it, the leadership of Jesus: To hold our purpose always open that we may be free to grow.
